Justice Graves honored for advancing public understanding of the law

July 16, 2002

The Mississippi Bar Foundation recently named Supreme Court Justice James E. Graves Jr. as recipient of its Law-Related Public Education Award.

The award, announced July 11 during the Mississippi Bar Convention in Sandestin, Fla., recognizes Justice Graves "for excellence in enhancing the public's understanding of the law and the legal system."

The Bar Foundation noted Justice Graves' work for the past 11 years coaching high school mock trial teams.

Justice Graves said, "It was very nice to receive an honor for something I enjoy doing as much as I enjoy this."

Justice Graves along with Jackson attorney Melvin Priester and teacher Karen Redhead coached the Murrah High School mock trial team to second place in the state in mock trial competition this year. The Murrah team won first place last year, placed second in 1997 and 2000 and was third in 1998.
