Judge Chandler returns from the University of Virginia

August 15, 2002

Mississippi Court of Appeals Judge David Chandler recently participated in a six-week study of constitutional law at the University of Virginia.

Chandler was among 30 judges nationwide who were accepted into the University of Virginia School of Law Master of Laws in the Judicial Process program.

"I am honored to be chosen to participate. The training will be of tremendous benefit in my work on the Court of Appeals," Chandler said Wednesday.

Chandler maintained his caseload at the Court of Appeals during his stay in Charlottesville, Va. He was able to do his research, writing and communication with staff via a computer link to the Court of Appeals.

The summer session, which began June 24, was taught with rich historical context in a setting where the ideals of democracy were born. Thomas Jefferson's home, Monticello, is three miles from the University which he founded.

Studies included four courses: Constitutional history, legal theory, law and economics, and legislation. The Constitution was at the center of all studies, Chandler said.

"It taught me some things about the period of time in which the Constitution was written that really provided me some insight into the purpose of that document...and how it serves to protect the freedoms that all citizens of our country enjoy," Chandler said.

Chandler, of Ackerman, earned his bachelor's master's and doctoral degree in education from Mississippi State University. He is a graduate of the University of Mississippi School of Law. He has served on the Court of Appeals since January 2001.
