Justice Waller is keynote speaker for MC Law School investiture Mississippi Supreme Court Presiding Justice William L. Waller Jr. will give the keynote address Friday, Feb. 20, at the investiture of James Rosenblatt as Dean of Mississippi College School of Law. The investiture is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Old Capitol Museum in Jackson. The ceremony is also an investiture for Patricia Evans as Assistant Dean of Admissions and Richard Bennett as Assistant Dean of Adjunct Faculty. The ceremony will recognize Harold Miller as Attorney in Residence and retired Court of Appeals Judge Mary Libby Payne as Scholar in Residence. Justice Waller, who became a Presiding Justice of the Supreme Court on Jan. 5, is expected to discuss a law school's role in providing academics, an ethical foundation and practical application of the law. Justice Waller since November 2001 has served as chairman of the Supreme Court's Rules Committee, which studies and adopts rules for the trial and appellate courts. Justice Waller, 52, has served on the Supreme Court since January 1998. He served as Municipal Judge for the City of Jackson from January 1995 until July 1996. He was in private law practice from 1977 to January 1998. Justice Waller previously served as chairman of the Mississippi Public Defender Task Force and as a member of the Judicial Study Commission. He was principal architect of legislation which created the office of Capital Post-Conviction Counsel and reformed the death penalty appeals process. Justice Waller completed more than 29 years of service in the Mississippi National Guard, attaining the rank of Brigadier General. He most recently commanded the 66th Troop Command headquartered in Jackson. #### |
