Access to Justice Commission will meet Feb. 28 The Mississippi Access to Justice Commission will meet on Wednesday, Feb. 28, at the Mississippi Bar Center at 643 North State Street in Jackson. Commission members and guests will gather at 9:30 a.m. for informal discussions over coffee. The meeting will convene at 10 a.m., break for lunch at 12:10 p.m., and resume at 12:30 p.m. The meeting is expected to conclude at 2 p.m. Members of the media are invited. The Access to Justice Commission was created by the Mississippi Supreme Court to develop a unified strategy to improve access to the civil courts for the poor. The Commission includes members of the judiciary, a representative of the Governor, legislators, business and community leaders, and members of the clergy. Representatives of entities which provide legal services are ex-officio members of the Commission. Subcommittees of the Commission have begun work in the areas of:
Discussions on Wednesday will include the Commission’s own planning efforts as well as the work of the Mississippi Bar Delivery of Legal Services Committee. Representatives of the Mississippi Center for Legal Services, North Mississippi Rural Legal Services, and the Mississippi Center for Justice are also expected to give an update on efforts to set up a statewide call center to assist poor people seeking help with civil legal issues. The Mississippi Access to Justice Commission works to address civil legal representation of the poor. It does not deal with indigent criminal defense issues. #### |
