Judge Carlton to speak at Youth Court Defender Conference Sept. 16

Mississippi Court of Appeals Judge Virginia Carlton will be among the guest speakers at the Mississippi Youth Court Defender Conference Sept. 16 in Ridgeland. Judge Carlton will speak at 8 a.m. about new Youth Court laws and rules.

The conference is Sept. 15-17 at Embassy Suites, 200 Township Place in Ridgeland. The conference is presented by the Office of Indigent Appeals Division of Public Defender Training. The program provides continuing legal education for state, county and municipal public defenders.

Judge Carlton is a member of the recently re-established Commission on Children’s Justice. She chairs a subcommittee which will address education for children who come within the jurisdiction of Youth Courts and the juvenile justice system.

Judge Carlton joined the Mississippi Court of Appeals in January 2007. She previously served for three years in the House of Representatives from District 100, which includes Jefferson Davis, Lamar and Marion counties. She was named as one of the Outstanding Legislators for Juvenile Justice. She served on House committees including Judiciary B, Juvenile Justice, Education, Colleges and Universities, Labor, and Marine Resources. She is a former assistant district attorney for the 15th Circuit Court District, and a former public defender.

Judge Carlton previously served as an adjunct professor at Mississippi College School of Law, and at Belhaven University.

She holds the rank of Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves, where she serves as Army Reserve Military Judge for courts-martial.

She is the mother of three.
