Justice Ann Lamar to speak at Ole Miss law student orientation Aug. 18 August 12, 2016 Mississippi Supreme Court Justice Ann H. Lamar of Senatobia will be the keynote speaker Aug. 18 during orientation for new law students at the University of Mississippi School of Law. Justice Lamar will speak at 9:50 a.m. in Weems Auditorium at the Robert C. Khayat Law Center in Oxford. Mississippi Bar President W. Briggs Hopson III of Vicksburg will speak at 9:30 a.m. Starting at 10:40 a.m., judges and lawyers from across the state will serve as facilitators for small group discussions with students. The breakout sessions examine hypothetical ethical dilemmas which lawyers may face. A luncheon for students, judges, lawyers and faculty is set for noon. Justice Lamar is expected to administer the professionalism oath to new law students during a ceremony set for 1 p.m. This is the first year for the University of Mississippi School of Law to conduct a professional oath ceremony for students, said Assistant Dean for Student Affairs Macey Edmondson. The ceremony will set the tone for the first year law students. Justice Lamar said, “I will remind students that they are embarking on a great adventure and that they are joining an honorable profession. It is a profession where ethics, professionalism and civility are more than buzz words. Those are the virtues we strive for. I also want to remind them that there will be great opportunities to serve their communities.” The annual James O. Dukes Law School Professionalism Program is sponsored by the Mississippi Bar as part of orientation for students entering law school. The program is named in honor of its founder, the late James O. Dukes of Gulfport, a former Mississippi Bar president. Orientation for law students entering the University of Mississippi School of Law begins Aug. 16 with an evening cookout. Interim Dean and Professor of Law Deborah H. Bell will welcome students at 9 a.m. Aug. 17. #### |
