Access to Justice Commission to meet on December 6 in Jackson December 1, 2016 The Access to Justice Commission will meet at noon Dec. 6 at the Mississippi Bar Center at 643 North State Street in Jackson. Commission members will gather for lunch at 11:30 a.m. Mississippi Judicial College Director Randy Pierce is expected to talk to the Commission about upcoming Judicial College conferences and programs. The Mississippi Judicial College, a division of the University of Mississippi School of Law, provides training and continuing legal education for all members of the judiciary: Supreme Court justices; Court of Appeals judges; trial court judges of the Chancery, Circuit and County courts; Youth Court judges and referees; and for Justice Court and Municipal Court judges. Court clerks, court administrators and court reporters are required to attend periodic legal education programs provided by the Judicial College. Service provider reports are expected from ACLU of Mississippi, Disability Rights Mississippi, Mission First Legal Aid Office, Mississippi Center for Legal Services, Mississippi College School of Law Clinical Programs, Mississippi Workers’ Center for Human Rights, Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers Project, North Mississippi Rural Legal Services, Southern Poverty Law Center, and the University of Mississippi School of Law Clinical Programs. Leaders of subcommittees working on service delivery systems, medical-legal partnerships, faith-based initiatives, resource development and public awareness will talk about the year’s work and future plans. The Access to Justice Commission was created by the Mississippi Supreme Court in June 2006 to develop a unified strategy to improve poor people’s access to the civil courts. The Commission is tasked to investigate the need for civil legal services to the poor in Mississippi, and to evaluate, develop and recommend policies, programs and initiatives which will assist the judiciary in meeting the civil legal services needs of the poor.
