16th District Chancery Court celebrates Adoption Day

November 13, 2008

The 16th District Chancery Court will celebrate a special Adoption Day on Friday, Nov. 14, at the Jackson County Courts Building on Convent Avenue in Pascagoula.

November is National Adoption Month. National Adoption Day is Saturday, November 15.

A public ceremony is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Friday in Courtroom B. Chancery Judge Jaye Bradley will welcome the adoptive families and speak to them as a group. Members of the media are welcome to attend the public gathering.

Members of the media attending the Adoption Day celebration can be put in touch with adoptive parents who may be willing to be interviewed. Media seeking interviews should attend the program.

Judge Bradley will handle the individual adoptions in another courtroom. Formal proceedings in any adoption case are closed to the public. No media coverage will be allowed inside those hearings.

Ten children are expected to be adopted. They are children who have been in foster care under the supervision of the Department of Human Services.

Judge Bradley has set aside the entire day for finalizing the adoptions.

Judge Bradley said, “This is the first time I’ve done a mass adoption day. I think it’s a great idea. It’s one of the few occasions in Chancery Court where everyone leaves happy. Most of the time we spend our efforts separating families, and it’s so nice to be able to put a family together. We are really looking forward to this occasion.”

The 16th District Chancery Court includes Jackson, George and Greene counties.
