Circuit Judge Toni Walker Terrett to take oath Dec. 27 in Vicksburg

New Ninth District Circuit Judge Toni Walker Terrett will be sworn in Dec. 27 at 3:30 p.m. at the Warren County Courthouse, 1009 Cherry Street in Vicksburg.

Mississippi Supreme Court Justice Leslie D. King and Court of Appeals Judge Latrice A. Westbrooks will speak. Circuit Judge James Chaney Jr. will preside. Judge Terrett’s predecessor, Circuit Judge Isadore Patrick, will administer the oath of office.

Judge Patrick will retire Dec. 31 after nearly 30 years of service on the Ninth Circuit Court, which includes Warren, Sharkey and Issaquena counties.

Judge Terrett has served as Municipal Judge for the city of Vicksburg since 2013. She previously served as judge pro tempore and Community Court judge beginning in 2009. She was coordinator of the Vicksburg Domestic Violence Victims Empowerment Program. While in private law practice, she also served as a Drug Court public defender and worked for Legal Services, providing civil legal representation to low-income clients. She began her legal career as a law clerk for Chancellor Vicki Roach Barnes.

She has served as a faculty member at Alcorn State University in the Department of Mass Communications, teaching print journalism, media law and ethics and graphic design. She began her career in journalism as news director and senior producer at the Alcorn State University radio station, WPRL-FM. She also worked as a freelance writer.

Judge Terrett, 44, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Tougaloo College, a Master of Arts degree in journalism from the University of Memphis, and a law degree from Mississippi College School of Law.

Across the state, 42 new judges will take their oaths of office in ceremonies scheduled during the next three weeks. New judges include three new Court of Appeals judges, 20 new Chancery Court judges, nine new Circuit Court judges and 10 new County Court judges.

New judicial terms begin on Jan. 1, 2019.
